Saturation point
Last night my two roommates and I sat around and wondered what to do. We had had the TV on for most of the day, watching either tennis, a recording of MTV's Katrina relief concert or various TV shows on DVD. Around 9pm we all felt that we had watched enough TV and needed something else to do. But what? I had spent part of the day reading, and wasn't too inclined to return to my book, we had all taken walks at various points and didn't feel the urge to venture out again and had caught up with each other on the previous night and any other news we wanted to share. So we found ourselves at a complete loss. What to do when the TV is turned off? We halfheartedly attempted to read out Trivial Pursuit questions to each other, which lasted less than 5 minutes, returned to the topic of recent crushes, made dinner and then, lacking any other ideas or creative suggestions - returned to the TV. Why is it that we are surrounded by screens all the time - be it the TV or the computer - but when we want out, we are lost without them? Why can't we find other forms of entertainment? What has happened to us?
I ended up finishing my book - more in protest against the TV than out of any urge to finish the book. I almost regretted having cleaned my room the previous day, since that would have given me something to do.
