First lines of books
Catching up on some blog reading today, came across a list of 100 good first lines from books. It has been pointed out on one blog that the list is based on the books rather than the lines themselves, and on another blog, the writer added some of his favorites. So read all the lists and come up with your own.
Here are some of my additions:
-'Christmas isn't Christmas without any presents,' grumbled Jo, lying on the rug. - Little Women, Louisa May Alcott
- The great fish moved silently through the night water, propelled by short sweeps of its crescent tail. - Jaws, Peter Benchley
- Serene was a word you could put to Brooklyn, New York. - A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Betty Smith
- Once upon a time there was a Martian named Valentine Michael Smith. - Stranger in a Strange Land, Robert Heinlein
- The beet is the most intense of vegetables. - Jitterbug Perfume, Tom Robbins
- Who is John Galt? - Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand
